So, what is Manga?
In it’s simplest definition, Manga is just the Japanese term for anything to do with comics or cartooning. However, in the West, we use it to mean anything published in Japan, or more commonly, the artistic style associated with the comics - bold, black-and-white artwork, striking lineart, and eccentric and varied characters.
Manga comics in Japan are commonly read by all ages and all genders, with different sub-genres catering to all walks of life. The 1950s and 60s saw a huge boom in the number of comics being published in Japan, and by the 80s, many of the more popular comics had started to make their way west.
The huge variety of stories and artistic styles available captivated the hearts and minds of young readers throughout the West via fan translations and eventually through localised publishers. Readers looking for a fresh take on storytelling sought out Manga volumes in their thousands. By the year 2000, a whole new generation of Manga fans had been born outside of Japan, and they started to create their own stories in the styles they had come to love.
Nowadays, translated Manga comics can be found in any book store in the UK and freely on the internet. Young artists create their own fan art of their favourite characters, and post them online for like-minded people to see and enjoy. Along with its animated cousin, Anime, Japanese cartoons have found a welcome home in the hearts of a Western audience, and they are here to stay. There are even live music performances featuring Japanese animated characters showing at venues across Europe!
With its readily accessible art style and wide variety of approachable themes suitable for all ages, Manga is the perfect stepping stone into drawing for young artists. Through practice, an aspiring artist can develop their fine motor skills and creativity, as well as making plenty of new friends along the way!
The art materials required are cheap and readily available, meaning there is no financial barrier for those who want to take part. The only limit is your imagination!
